Church of Abu Serga and Ben Ezra Synagogue

We then descended to a level lower than the street level (pic. 1) to make our way through the narrow streets of old Cairo. Pic. 2 is of the doorway that was used to protect the area. Today it contains the ever present tourist police.

Pic. 3 is of an ancient doorway with the ever present street vendor.

We first stopped at the Abu Serga church where pre-Easter services were going on. From there we went to the Ben Ezra Synagogue. Our guide indicated that between 80 and 130 Jews live in Egypt so not enough to conduct regular services but people do come to pray there. In the synagogue there was the rock where Moses prayed to God to free the people of Israel. It was surrounded by marble. I had no idea we would see this sight so was very impressed with it. In addition apparently the spot where Moses was found on the Nile was nearby but we didn't see it. Pic. 4 is of the outside of the synagogue.
