Forbidden city living quarters



From the long stone courtyard we enter into what appears to be some back alleyways (pic. 1). These lead to smaller courtyards surrounded by buildings (pic. 2). The displays in this area are really interesting. There are many rooms to view. Pics. 2 and 3 show the interior of one that contains a writing desk. Again you can imagine what it would be like with the incense burning, lamps lit and someone fanning the Emporer as he attends to his duties.

Many of the most elaborate ones are behind glass and difficult to photograph but they contain many fabric items that need to be protected from the elements and valuable furniture and decorations. The decorating style is very heavy, lavish and ornate.
