Friendly, hungry deer

Miyajima island is considered sacred and the deer on it are protected. As a result they are fearless and wander about the area with no fear of humans.

Pic. 1 is of a deer near a lantern. The entire path to the shrine was lined with these stone lanterns on both sides. We were told they were lit at night. It must be a spectacular sight!

The deer eat paper and cloth. It was more than once that we saw a nose poked in one of our tour member's bags. This deer in pic. 2 seems to have picked a brochure out of the bicycle's basket.

People of all ages enjoyed petting the deer (pic. 3).
