On the way to the center our driver hit a woman walking by the side of the road. Thankfully she wasn't hurt as he only hit her purse. It was lucky that she didn't get caught and pulled under the car. She had her young 5ish year old daughter holding her hand so it was doubly lucky that there was not a tragedy. There was no excuse for our driver swerving into her as we were on a straight reasonably clear road. We had a driver who seemed to be one of the pushiest on the road, straddling multiple lanes to block other cars, trying to push by others at every opportunity even with oncoming traffic that often forced him back into his original place.
While I'm on the subject of the driver I might as well address one of the big enjoyment hurdles of this tour. As I mentioned before the pollution in Beijing was bad. The air in the car was thick with smoke smell, making it hard to breath in the car. It was cold out so you couldn't ride with the windows down. By the end of the second day I was developing a hard substance in my lungs that I could feel every time I breathed and I had a dry cough.
