First we spotted the O-torii Gate rising above the shimmering water (pic. 1). At the entrance to the shrine we saw the customary purification water area (right hand side of pic. 2). Our guide explained that we should wash our right hand first, then the left, then the right again (I hope I got that right). We washed up, with our new knowledge of the meaning of the ritual.
