The ship was docked about 3-4 hours away from Phnom Penh. It was an exciting ride with exciting sights along the way. The most interesting thing was the mix of traffic. There were ox carts, cows, bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles, every type of farm traffic, buses, trucks and cars all harmoniously sharing the rode. Everyone made way for everyone else and it all seemed to flow. Our driver drove very fast but he knew to give notice to those ahead with his horn and to slow down and give a wider margin to animals. We made excellent time and beat the ships tour back by about an hour. We passed rice paddies, hills covered with palm trees, many market areas and rural areas. It was an interesting drive.
I loved Cambodia and had fun throughout my visit! I could have easily spent 7 days (or even 3 weeks!) exploring the Siem Reap area. Although it was hot, humid and there were mosquitoes everywhere the feeling was so tropical and harmonious that you couldn't help feeling good. I think the harmonious feeling is from the Cambodian people who were delightful. I would return again in a heart beat and regretted having to get back on the ship. The ruins in Siem Reap were beyond amazing. I don't think I've ever seen anything as fabulous. My pictures do not do them justice. Not only were they large, but the artistry was striking. In addition, the small details in the carvings invited you to study them in detail. Every which way you looked there was beauty whether you were looking at a macro or micro level.
The wonderful feeling of harmony also permeated the city streets. It's hard to describe but my take away was that generally people made way for each other. As a result the chaotic traffic worked well.
